February 25, 2018Mindfulness as Pain Management
Meditation is more than just relaxation. At Blue Heron Chiropractic we believe that mindfulness and meditation can aid rehabilitation and decrease pain. Conscious contemplation can reprogram the body’s approach to pain, boost vitality and promote healing. In a few minutes, you can improve the quality of your head space and this can ease physical stress. Mindfulness meditation has been shown in clinical trials to reduce chronic pain by 57 percent.
When you have pain, you might find that the sensation prevents you from focusing. The longer the pain persists, the more confused the nervous system becomes. Consequently, your thoughts spiral, triggering stress. As an alternative care provider, I want to give you as many tools as possible to manage situations like this.
More Than Mental
Mindfulness and meditation are not about “thinking away” pain. Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment while calmly acknowledging and accepting feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. This method of treatment is applicable to back pain, migraine headaches, sprains, strains and many other common conditions.
Meditation may conjure up ideas of religious settings or sacred spaces, but in reality, meditation and mindfulness can occur anywhere. In a perfect moment, imagine if rather than becoming upset that something has flared up again, you might calmly reflect “oh, yes, there that is again. I know what that is.” Reorganizing and “re-wiring” the way your brain thinks about pain can improve the speed of rehabilitation and recovery.
Having said that, Blue Heron Chiropractic & Healing Arts Center would like to recommend the Headspace App, available for download on the App Store. A few minutes with it could change your whole day. Headspace is a really a nice intro to meditation; it’s customizable, user friendly, and entirely affordable.
Let’s talk about meditation at your next appointment. We can even engage in a brief session during your appointment. I encourage patients to experience how mindfulness and meditation can add to healing and rehabilitation results through chiropractic. Schedule an appointment today.
